As i have decided to use the reject tetra pak material i will no longer need to print a design onto it as ill be using the foil layer on the outside. However i still think its important to incorporate the research i have on attracting bees using colour and pattern as i think it needs make a valuable contribution to ensuring that bees will be attracted to my product. I have decided to provide vinyl stickers to put onto the outside wall were the entrance to the nest tubes are. As this is set inside the wrapping and covered by the protective roof, it should be protected from the weather. I could provide a variety of different designs to suit different tastes which would mean my product can be appealing to a wide variety of people as my specification states
Changed what i am going to do about the patterns. Instead of making vinyl stickers which may potentially peel off, it would be better to print onto the polypropylene using dye sublimation.
New design idea's
Eyelets colour!
I chose grey eyelets because i wanted it to match the colour of the outside wrapping.Unfortunately the colour of the eyelets i wanted (grey) are not available and cannot find another seller who have the same colour. Therefore ive had to compromise and use white ones instead. Although this is not ideal i think i can adapt my design colouring to accommodate the white and think it will still look ok.
finalised
Ive been thinking about my design choices and feel my designs do not have to necessarily have to be 'busy' looking to the human eye but subtle changes in colour and tone will be picked up by the bee! I've taken the honey comb design further and made adjustments to the tones of orange coming from the sides and into the centre directing the bees to the nest tubes as a flower pattern would to the pollen. What i also like about the honey comb design is that it is the most gender neutral and non age restricted design I could think of, and fits well with the idea of bee's (although mason bees are not honey bees). I originally wanted to make the product look like a bee with red and yellow stripes, making the face plates with a bee themed design will allow me to be more creative where as i am restricted by the tetra pan colourings.
I have changed the colours in the example below to highlight what i mean by this as the finished one will not highlight this....
The actual design is below. The changes in colouring is almost undetectable to the human eye however the bee will see this as vivid as the one above. In terms of how bees will see the colours, they will see the orange tones as yellow/green and ultraviolet purple and the white area's blue/green.
Finalised designs
Honey comb- As I explained early ive reworked this design to make it more appealing to bees and is a fun a gender neutral design choice.
Flower Design - Taking advantage of nature, im Using an image of a flower which will attract the bees and is a nice design for humans.
Cartoon Bee - Blue and yellow are the most attractive colours to bees, the bee images hovers directly over the nest holes which will draw the bees in. This is the 'fun' design aimed at younger users
The product will need three walls, even though the middle wall cannot be seen completely the tables will stick out of the top and think its best to still print the design on it otherwise it will look odd.
Envelope design
To finish off the product i thought it would be nice if it was packaged in a nice envelope, this is one of my initial designs.
The aesthetics of the product has kind of taken a back seat as i have obviously focused more sop on the functionality of the design. I decided to make it much more simple and took the pattern printed on the inner walls and transferred this on the envelope using the dye sublimation. I still the the outcome is rather nice and sometimes simple works well.
Envelope design.
To finish it off to make it look more a product i added a barcode. If i was to properly manufacture this as a product, they would all be made up ready to be posted out and need only to be scanned and then popped in the post.
